Stephanie Cimatu of the Ilocos Norte Schools Division broke the old record with her 41.27-meter distance record, which is equivalent to a gold medal, Nelson Ladia, in-charge of the athletics record of Region 1 during the Palarong Pambansa, said.
Aside from Cimatu, those who captured gold were Christian Rafael of Pangasian 2 Schools Division (taekwondo boys-elementary), Joan Caido of Pangasinan 1 (athletics girls-secondary), Lovely Grace Collado of Pangasinan 2 (arnis girls-elementary), Al Clinton Lomabao of Ilocos Norte (arnis boys-secondary), Melanie Hope Douglas of Alaminos City (taekwondo girls-secondary), Brena Mae Membrere of La Union (chess girls-secondary), Glaicel Batulan of San Fernando City (chess girls-secondary), and Gracelyn Alcaras of Laoag City (chess girls-elementary).
The athletes who captured silver medals are Dante Castro of Pangasinan 2 (athletics boys-800 meters elementary), Mark Conrado Manipon of Urdaneta City (javelin boys-elementary), Ludivico dela Cruz of Pangasinan 2 (athletics girls-elementary 100-meter hurdles), Aludin Pangaraag of Laoag City (taekwondo girls-secondary), and Chona Mayola of Alaminos City (athletics girl-elementary, 1,500-meter run).
In the set national games, Region 1 Athletics Association (R1AA) brought home nine golds, six silvers and 15 bronzes. However, the medal haul is good enough for 12th place in the medal standing among the 17 regions.
Fifteen bronzes were also captured by Region 1.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of Pangasinan is waiting for the result of their bid for the hosting of Palarong Pambansa 2011.
Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, Provincial Sports Coordinator Modesto Operana, together with four Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, earlier presented to the Palarong Pambansa committee its intention to host next year’s event.
Baraan said the province has all the necessary facilities to host said national games as all the facilities built when it hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 1995 are in tip top shape. These include, among others, the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen and the Olympic size swimming pool in Dagupan City.
Dr. Alfredo Nipal, Pangasinan 2 Sports Supervisor, said aside from Pangasinan, the other areas which submitted their bid to host are Negros Occidental, Marikina City, Laguna, and Nueva Viscaya. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)
