Urdaneta City, Pangasinan (6 February) -– A city-wide massive vegetable production program in this premier eastern Pangasinan City seeks to assure more food on people's dining table was launched by the city government.
Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the city government will help the people produce their own food in their backyards, school lots and all available lands that will be harnessed for food production.
The city agriculture office was mobilized by Perez to prepare the necessary seeds and seedlings to be distributed by the people participating in this massive vegetable planting venture.
The program was identified as the city's main thrust for 2009 since vegetable planting requires less capital to start, unlike hog and poultry raising which he said is capital and labor intensive and the cost of feeds is very prohibited.
The city has so far distributed vegetable seedlings to members of the barangay councils and senior citizens, Perez said, adding that in two weeks, seedlings will also be made available to all public schools to make sure that pupils and students will have something to plant in their backyards.
Malunggay seedlings will also be distributed to the households in a month and a half time, he said.
The vegetable planting program will be intensified to make sure that members of households will have something to fend for themselves in the coming days, Perez said as he noted that the coming months may yet be marked by uncertainties because of the continuing financial crisis.
"The financial crisis does not hurt us yet we are preparing for the worst," Perez said, adding that with plenty of vegetables in their backyard, people need not buy these from the market anymore.
At the same time, said the city government is expanding its own livelihood training center so that it can accommodate trainees and help upgrade their skills on various profitable activities. (PIA Pangasinan)
