Urdaneta tops all cities in Ilocos

URDANETA CITY–For the third consecutive year, the city of Urdaneta was adjudged as the leading city in the Ilocos Region for 2007 mainly due to its excellent resource management.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the city is happy and proud about the honor based on a Commission on Audit (COA) report, but would not want to brag about it.

Perez, in an interview with The PUNCH, attributed the city's good fiscal performance to transparency of the city government saying every transaction, whether big or small, is open for anyone to see.

He said that because of this openness, the people and businessmen pay their correct taxes religiously to the city government. At the same time, Perez said they strengthened their tax collection efforts to ensure that Urdaneta functioned well as a public corporation.

"Our secret in preserving our good financial performance was on the tremendous support of the business sector and the townspeople." Perez said.

"This is the third year that we have this. But we are not boasting about it. But neither are we resting our laurel and contented with our performance,” he added.

Based on the COA report, Urdaneta City registered the highest net income among all eight cities in Ilocos at P126.7 million.

Urdaneta is the only other second class city in Region 1, aside from Dagupan, which posted a net income of P72.3 million.

Although Urdaneta has a total income of P491 million, it also registered the highest expenses at P365 million, a notch higher than Dagupan City’s P359 million.

Dagupan leads in total liabilities at P356 million followed by Urdaneta at P262 million.

Urdaneta also scored the highest assets among all other cities in the region at P1.15 billion, total equity at P864 million.-LM
