Urdaneta City still salad bowl of Pangasinan

URDANETA CITY—The city of Urdaneta remains the vegetable capital not only of Pangasinan but of the entire Ilocos Region.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the town’s vegetable “bagsakan” market, the biggest in the entire Region I, is proof that it is in Urdaneta where vegetables being distributed to various parts of the country are coming from.

Perez said Urdaneta is not only the trading center for all sorts of vegetable but is also a big producer of vegetables as well.

From 15 to 20 truck loads of vegetables leave Urdaneta City daily for Metro Manila where they are re-distributed to various markets throughout the country.

The vegetables come not only from farms in Pangasinan but also from other parts of the Ilocos Region and Cordillera,Perez said.

The “Bagsakan” Market has its own cold-storage plants in order to keep vegetables really fresh, he said.

Perez added that since the start of the year, he had ordered a massive vegetable planting program to ensure that each household will have plenty of vegetables to eat as well as to sell in the market.

The city government re-introduced vegetable gardening as a livelihood activity of every family so that each one can supply the market with their respective products.

Perez said the city government distributed hybrid vegetable seeds for each household for planting in their backyards this summer.
