URDANETA—In time for the opening of classes in June this year, the city government is now finalizing the guidelines to avail of the college scholarship grant offered by Urdaneta’s sister city Ordizia, in Spain’s prosperous Basque region.
Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the scholarships are intended for poor but deserving high school graduates so that they can go to college and take up a four-year course.
Perez signed the sisterhood pact in Ordizia on December 5 last year during the celebration of
the 500th birthday of Ordizia’s favorite son and hero, Fr. Andres de Urdaneta.
Fr. Urdaneta, an explorer, navigator and scholar from Ordizia, was from whom this city derived its name.
Ordizia, headed by Mayor Jose Sta. Maria, promised the equivalent of P9.5 million in scholarship grant so that economically-challenged students from Urdaneta can have the opportunity to earn college degrees.
Sta. Maria and members of the Ordizia city council will be official guests of Urdaneta on March 25 to observe local situations.
The group intends to bring along a business mission to look for business prospects in the Philippines, particularly Urdaneta.
It will be Sta. Maria’s second trip to Urdaneta since coming here November 15 last year.
Perez said students who may be granted the scholarship may enroll not only in the city-owned University of the City of Urdaneta but in any university here.
There are now at least three universities operating in Urdaneta.
Perez thanked Mayor Sta. Maria and the people of Ordizia for granting the scholarships, the first fruit of the sisterhood relations between Urdaneta and Ordizia cities.—LM
