Urdaneta is cleanest, greenest, safest city in Region 1

URDANETA CITY, March 2 (PNA) Philippine News -- The city of Urdaneta in eastern Pangasinan was adjudged as the Cleanest, Greenest and Safest City (CGSC) in Region 1 for the year 2010 in a search conducted by the Regional Development Council and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The SCGSC is a regional award which recognizes the significant contributions of cities and for serving as an excellent model in the promotion of a clean, healthy and safe environment for the constituents of the Ilocos Region.
Now a burgeoning city, Urdaneta topped this year’s search with Alaminos City, also in Pangasinan while Candon City in Ilocos Sur was in third place.
The three cities bested other cities in Region 1 which include Dagupan and San Carlos in Pangasinan, San Fernando in La Union, Vigan in Ilocos Sur; and Laoag and Batac in Ilocos Norte.

The award for Urdaneta was received by Mayor Amadeo Perez VI in ceremonies held at Ariana Hotel in Bauang, La Union last week.
Urdaneta, a leading trade center in Pangasinan, is now building its P200-million sanitary landfill in Barangay Catablan which is set to be completed sometime in April.

It is the first local government unit in Pangasinan to have complied with the provisions of Republic Act 9003, or the Solid and Ecological Waste Management Act, by building its own sanitary landfill in an initial 10-hectare lot.

On the other hand, Alaminos City bagged the second top prize for its sound coastal resources management program, sustained cleanliness and environmental awareness drive, and good governance which are all part of the 10-point agenda.
