Philippine Provinces Under Tsunami Alert Levels 1 and 2

A strong distant earthquake occurred NEAR COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN at 1:46PM, 11 March 2011 (Philippine Time, located at 38.2 deg N, 142.5 deg W with depth of 10KM and a preliminary magnitude of 8.8. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center sea level monitoring stations confirmed the occurrence of a tsunami.

PHIVOLCS Tsunami Alert Level is now 2. The concerned public is advised to BE ON ALERT FOR UNUSUAL WAVES. Based on tsunami wave models and early tide gauge records of the tsunami in the Pacific, coastal areas in the Philippine provinces fronting the Pacific Ocean are expected to experience wave heights of at most one meter. The first tsunami waves will arrive between 5:00PM to 7:00PM MARCH 11, 2011 Philippine time and may not always be the largest. The waves may continue for hours. People are advised to stay away from the shoreline during this period. People should not go to the coast to watch the tsunami. People whose houses are very near coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean are strongly advised to go farther inland.

Only the coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean of the following provinces should keep watch: 

Batanes Group of Islands, Sorsogon, Cagayan,Northern Samar,Northern most areas of Ilocos Norte, Eastern Samar, Isabela, Leyte,Quezon, Southern Leyte, Aurora, Surigao del Norte, Camarines Norte, Surigao del Sur, Camarines Sur, Davao Oriental, Albay, Davao del Sur, Catanduanes.

Owners of boats in harbor, estuaries or shallow coastal water of the above-mentioned provinces should secure their boats and move away from the water front. Boats already at sea during this period should stay offshore in deep waters until further advised.

A tsunami was observed in Japan following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake. The 8.8-magnitude earthquake sent 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter, according to the Associated Press. 


"In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed severe flooding, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.


At this time, no casualty has been reported yet.


It was reported earlier (15 hours ago) that deadly quake hit China also. "Rescue efforts underway after a deadly earthquake in southwestern China", according to ABC News.


"Earthquake near China's Myanmar border leaves more than 22 people dead."


Meanwhile, media organizations in the Philippines reported that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the Tsunami Alert Level 1 is up in over 19 provinces located east coast of the country due to the Japan Earthquake.


PHIVOLCS chief Renato Solidum said in a nationwide radio broadcast that the entire eastern seaboard of the Philippines, from Batanes to the Davao region, are under Tsunami Alert Level 1.


The first tsunami waves will arrive between 5:00PM to 7:00PM MARCH 11, 2011 Philippine time.


The waves may continue for hours. People are advised to stay away from the shoreline during this period. People should not go to the coast to watch the tsunami. People whose houses are very near coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean are strongly advised to go farther inland.


In a bulletin issued by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) these provinces are under watch and must prepare for a possible evacuation:
