Pangasinan Dominates R1AA. Urdaneta Wins Special Awards

MANILA, Philippines - Pangasinan II ended Ilocos Norte’s reign in the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet, formerly Ilocos Region Athletic Association, as it captured the overall championship at the close of the six-day meet at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) in Lingayen, Pangasinan over the weekend.
The Pangasinenses dominated athletics, badminton, taekwondo, lawn tennis, chess, basketball and arnis and earned total points of 503.5, beating Ilocos Norte, which had 490.5 points. Pangasinan 1 took third place honors with 476 points.
Gov. Amado Espino Jr. congratulated the host province’s athletes and vowed to continue supporting them in their quest for sporting excellence.
Dr. Viraluz Raguindin, schools division superintendent of Pangasinan II, said the key to their success was their athletes’ determination and the all-out support of the governor.
La Union finished fourth with 308.75 points followed by Laoag City (195.25 points); Alaminos City (130.25 points); Dagupan City, (121.5 points); San Carlos City, (102.75 points); Urdaneta City, (99 points); San Fernando City, (91 points); Ilocos Sur, (82 points); Candon City, (70 points); Batac City and Vigan City with 62.5 and 45 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Urdaneta City won the award for the Best Eco-Friendly Banner and the Cleanest and Most Orderly Delegation while the Best in Parade was the Candon City delegation.
The top performers in the event will represent the region in this year’s Palarong Pambansa slated May 8-14 in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.
