Of Choice, Excommunication and Detention

Our president seems to be a magnet for controversies these days. Barely out of the shadow of the hostage taking debacle last month, the jueteng scandal erupts. Publicly revealed by retired Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, included is our very own Pangasinan governor as one of the bigtime jueteng lords in the country.  Now, there is another issue escalating in the country concerning the president's stand on birth control and family planning. Apparently, the Catholic church is threatening to excommunicate President Aquino if he does not change his position on this issue.

"Being the President of all, you must consider the position of the Catholic Church because we are approaching these issues from the moral aspect like the unborn. Abortion is a grave crime. Excommunication is attached to [it]. That is an issue of gravity, that is a violation of God's commandment,"  Says Bishop Nereo Odchimar of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, the current CBCP president.

While they are open for dialogue, Malacanang has yet to issue a statement to reach out to the CBCP for open talks. So far, it looks like PNoy remains resilient on his stand the Filipino must be given an informed choice.

On a seemingly related occurrence, Carlos Celdran, a well known tour guide/ activist was thrown in jail for causing  a scene at the Manila Cathedral supporting a proposed population policy promoting artificial contraception.
