DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines—At least 15 Pangasinan mayors have committed to support the tandem of Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, if he decides to run for President, with Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay as his running mate, a local official said.
Binmaley Mayor Simplicio Rosario, a member of the August Twenty-One Movement (Atom) and a long-time Binay supporter, said the Pangasinan mayors had told him they were supporting Aquino because of his good name and reputation.
"They told me that Noynoy has not been involved in corruption and Mayor Binay will make a good vice president because he is a performer and will certainly complement Noynoy as President," said Rosario, a member of the administration Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.
He said Binay, a supporter of Aquino's mother, the late former president Corazon Aquino, and who has led Makati since the late 1980s, has vast experience in local governance.
Rosario, however, declined to identify the mayors supporting the proposed Aquino-Binay tandem but said they will come out soon.
Binay, in his recent visits to Pangasinan, signed Makati sisterhood agreements with the local governments of Binmaley, Bayambang, San Quintin, Mangaldan, Manaoag, Rosales and San Fabian, and the city governments of Alaminos, Urdaneta and San Carlos. more
