CHED told to explain irregularities in call center project before reviving program

MANILA, Philippines - Before reviving its plan to implement its call center project, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) should first explain what happened to the P550 million call center project initiated by then-CHED chair Romulo Neri.

Radio dzBB's Nimfa Ravelo reported that Pimentel demanded CHED officials to answer allegations that shrouded the multimillion-peso call center project in response to reports that the agency was planning to revive it.

Among the questions that should be answered by CHED are the alleged overpricing of the contract and the awarding of the project without bidding.

Pimentel noted that the call center buildings that were set up in five state universities and colleges as well as the very expensive communication facilities purchased for the project have been rendered useless when the project was halted.

Call center laboratories were set up in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Technological University in Manila; Tarlac State University; Pangasinan State University; Don Mariano Marcos State University in La Union; and Laguna Polytechnic State University.

The call center project was initially conceptualized to serve as venue where students could render hours for their internship while earning money. Also, the project was seen as an income generating venture for these state universities. - Mikhaela De Leon, GMANews.TV
