VILLASIS -- Four persons died as a tricycle which drove past an 18-wheeler truck along McArthur Highway at Barangay Bacag here collided with an incoming L-300 van.

The victims were identified as Arnel Rafanan, Rey Mamasig, Virgilio Balecha and Ernesto Balecha Jr.

Jaime Fernandez, driver of the van, was taken to the Villasis Police Station for custodial investigation.

Initial police investigation disclosed that Rafanan (who was then driving the tricycle southward) drove the tricycle ahead the 18-wheeler truck they were tailing.

Police said he could have miscalculated the distance of the northbound and approaching Mitsubishi L-300 van causing the head-on collision. The tricycle turned-turtle and was a total wreck.

The attending physicians at the Don Amadeo Jr. Memorial Hospital in Urdaneta City declared Rafanan and Balecha Jr. dead-on-arrival. Likewise, Virgilio was pronounced dead-on-arrival by the attending physician at the Villasis Polymedic Hospital while Mamasig died at the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City while undergoing treatment.

A good number of vehicular accidents along MacArthur Highway were recorded last year by the Rosales, Villasis, Urdaneta City, Binalonan, Pozorrubio and Sison Police Stations.

Some of the vehicles involved include tricycles, motorcycles and even kuligligs which are being used by farmers as means of transportation.
