'Walk-for-a-cause' generates P650T: lawmaker

URDANETA CITY -- A "walk-for-a-cause" fund-raising drive initiated by Pangasinan fifth district Representative Mark Cojuangco for teachers had so far raised over P650,000 in cash.

Cojuangco said there are still pledges coming in, thus he hoped that they would be able to generate more than P1 million. He said with the initial fund, they would organize a non-stock, non-profit foundation that will be called as Educators' Competitiveness Enhancement Foundation (ECEF).

The lawmaker launched the project in Bautista town on December 11 last year. From there, he started the walkathon that passed through Alcala, Sto. Tomas, Urdaneta City, Binalonan, Loac, Pozorrubio and ended in Barangay Cabaritan, Sison.

Some local officials and town people joined Cojuangco's group along the way. The activity lasted for several days.

Cojuangco said he wanted to create awareness among the people in Pangasinan's fifth district on the plight of the teachers. "The plight of the teachers is not only the concern of the leaders in the district, but the concern of everybody. My objective was to show to my constituents that if there is a congressman who is willing to do the physical activity without having to explain and that if their leader is willing to sacrifice for the teachers, then it must be a worthy or an important cause," he said.

"I want the attention of the people to be focused on the proficiency of the teachers, for them to have better exposure to broaden their knowledge base. That they have to look outward to what's happening in the rest of the world so that they could give more knowledge to their students," he added.

Cojuangco said the P1-million fund they are aiming to raise would be used in funding scholarships of teachers.
