URDANETA CITY—A light bulb framed by a wooden box atop a mango tree is a signal that shabu dealers in Barangay Camantiles here have available supplies, police officials said.

The signal light is turned off when there is no shabu available, Supt. Paquito Navarrete, city police chief, said.

The police discovered the scheme during a raid on houses suspected to be selling shabu here. They had arrest warrants for six suspected shabu dealers in the village.

“On the first day that the raid was conducted, we thought the light was merely to illuminate the road, but a resident told us (that it was being used) as a signal light,” Navarrete said.

The police later found out that the extension wire of the light was connected to the house of a couple they wanted to arrest but who were out during the raid.

The police filed charges of illegal drug use against 10 persons, eight of whom were found inside the house of the couple.

Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, regional police director, met with representatives of the village on Thursday, and told them to police their ranks.
